Sea Monsters: Prehistoric Ocean Predators

This summer experience an all-new exhibit on creatures from the deep! From Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick” to Jules Verne’s “Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea,” the ocean has long been a subject of deep wonder and mystery. Today, the ocean remains a mysterious place for most of us, dark and frightening, with tales of sea monsters and leviathans lurking in the deep. Journey with us to the Sea Monsters: Prehistoric to Modern Day Ocean Predators exhibit as we explore the depths of the ocean in search of modern day sea monsters.

Your voyage will be an adventure spanning time from prehistoric sea monsters, like the Mosasaurus lurking in the shadows, to modern day behemoths, like the Portuguese Man-of-War that can stretch its tentacles 165 feet below the surface of the sea. Discover special adaptations like bioluminescence and camouflage that marine life has acquired to live in the deep, dark crevasses of the ocean. Uncover stories based in poetry and literature like that of the Kraken, a giant sea monster that lies in wait for seafarers who must escape the reach of its omnivorous giant tentacles.

Thanks to modern science and marine biology we think we know what’s below the surface! But do we? Explore the habitat of Earth’s oceans with submersibles that can travel to the deepest depths of the seafloor but what if there is some truth to the myths and legends of ancient sailors? For most of human history, the vast watery abode of the ocean — which covers 70 percent of the Earth’s surface — remained unexplored. But in recent decades, technology has begun to give humans a glimpse of this deep-sea landscape. Join us on this adventure!
